Social Justice Poetry Project (Senior English)
Project Overview
This is a potential project that I would assign to a senior English 12 class (likely English 11 or English 12).
There would be two parts to this assignment. The first part is the "creative mark" which would be based on the content of the poem (which should be at least eleven lines long, developed around a central idea/theme, and address the subject matter in a mature and respectful way) as well as the effectiveness of their use of at least two of the literary devices that we would explore in class (if they used more then I gave them the highest mark on the most effective devices used). The second part would be an artist's statement that the students would hand in with their poem; the mark for the artist's statement would be broken down into content (the quality of the analysis of their work as well as the quality of their their reflection) and style (which would be informed by the stylistic aspects of their writing and their mastery of the standard conventions of written English).
